@cshperspectives What qualifies as “preprint”, “article”, “dataset”, “journal”, “book?” Who decides? If you take on the obligations (& costs) of metadata & preserving links for the scholarly record, then we expect posterity will decide whether what you assigned DOIs to was worth the effort.
